Nordic Forum 2019 – Together We Are Better

This spring Helsinki, and SHS as the responsible organization, had the privilege to host Nordic Forum for us and our fellow Nordic Boards.

Nordic Forum is a conference held every year to bring together the managements and boards of the student organizations in leading Nordic business schools to learn about each other, to discuss relevant topics and issues that concern all of us, to find ways for further collaboration between our organizations and of course to network with our fellow colleagues.

Currently the student organizations included are SHS from Hanken, SASSE from Stockholm School of Economics, CBS Students from Copenhagen Business School, SBIO and BIS from BI Business School in Norway, NHHS from Norwegian School of Economics, SHSG from University of St. Gallen in Switzerland (as the only non-Nordic business school), and KY of course.

Although we have quite different structures in our organizations, as some are more project-run and others act solely as an umbrella for independent clubs and societies, we are really similar in e.g. the amount of members, the status of the business school and especially in the struggles we face. For example, getting the members to volunteer was a problem everywhere, but our situation was probably the best in volunteering.

This was the first year of the conference held in its new format of sector-specific discussions on topics suggested by all the participating organizations. The sectoral groups allowed us to get even more value from the forum as the expertise of each sector was used efficiently in the discussions. Also, some bigger and current global themes such as sustainability in the organizations were brainstormed and discussed at the end of the forum. We noticed that we’re dragging behind in sustainability, and we will act in order to solve this. We also had workshops on improving the continuity of our boards and organizations, and furthermore on improving Nordic collaboration for our many members.

In its current form, the Nordic Forum provides a great possibility every year to meet and benchmark like-minded people from similar associations as KY. The most immediate benefits at the moment are the support, new standpoints and different ideas received from our partners. Concrete actions have also already been taken. Last year several concrete benchmark ideas were gotten, and projects such as anonymous feedback channel on Kyweb, improved volunteer trainings and improved course feedback system (Fringe Study Guide) have been already executed. This year some of these benchmarks for possible project include Instagram takeovers, shared event calendar and ways to be more sustainable.

Improving the Nordic collaboration and making the most out of it is a continuous process with slow but significant benefits, which is why we are so happy to have taken a leap forward with the new guidelines. After all, our Nordic partners are the most important benchmarks for us and most of all, our lovely friends.
